Volunteer GIS Intern Reports to: GIS Analyst Position Summary The intern will work with an experienced professional, the GIS Analyst, primarily to support Wild Salmon Center site-based and regional conservation programs by developing and maintaining relevant data and metadata as they pertain to various projects. Depending on the intern's experience, interest and availability, s/he will be responsible for performing a broad range of GIS functions including but not limited to: creating informative maps; gathering, processing and documenting geographic data; fixing broken links in maps to recently moved data; editing vector/raster datasets; conducting research (finding datasets, including imagery, new GIS tools, etc.); creating datasets from raw data or converting from non-spatial form; and creating or finding documentation of datasets. A successful intern will be able to work both independently and collaboratively; develop high quality maps; and hone professional GIS skills as applied to conservation projects. The internship is a volunteer position envisioned for 10-20 hours per week for approximately eight to ten weeks. This summer at Georgia State University in Atlanta, we are pleased to host a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site: Addressing Social and Environmental Disparities through Community Geography and Geographic Information Systems. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation. The program runs June 18th – August 2nd.
Research Interests: Working with faculty mentors in one of three research tracks, 10 selected undergraduates will engage in community-based research and fieldwork to quantitatively and qualitatively examine neighborhood change, property markets, air and soil quality, urban green spaces, and neighborhood visioning in partnership with neighborhood residents and community groups. Compensation: Each REU student will receive a competitive funding package, including: a $3000 stipend, up to $250 in travel support to/from Atlanta, up to $750 for conference presentations, free room and board at GSU, and 3 required texts. Duties: The majority of the work under this recruitment will be scanning, georectifying and digitizing of historic real estate maps related to Corps of Engineers flood control and power generation facilities and populating a geodatabase of real estate information. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Duty Location: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Portland District Headquarters (SW 1st & Oak). Experience: Experience with ArcGIS software, geodatabase design, and vectorization of scanned maps is a plus but not a requirement. Appropriate training will be provided to a motivated candidate lacking prior experience. Hours: This is a part-time position (16-20 hours per week) not to exceed 1 year with flexible hours to accommodate a student's class schedule.
