The mixed tour of duty TERM position is located in El Portal, CA. These positions will require working with NPS staff in different divisions throughout the park, other organizations associated with the park, interest groups, and the public. These positions may require the following skills: 1. Carrying out project management duties by developing work plans and schedules, scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals and/or grants 2. Designing, developing, creating, and managing GIS projects, statistics, and databases for the long-term maintenance, analysis and dissemination of natural resource-related data sets, working closely with network data managers, park resource managers, scientists, GIS specialists, and cooperating personnel. 3. Designing, developing, testing, and implementing scientific monitoring protocols for restoration, revegetation, or invasive species projects. 4. Designing and implementing meadow or wetland monitoring or restoration. 5. Training, leading, and supervising other NPS staff, volunteer groups or interns, sometimes in a wilderness setting. 6. Organizing and ensuring good coordination and logistics for field crews. 7. Developing, designing, and implementing habitat restoration projects. 8. Controlling invasive plants through integrated pest management (IPM), including the use of fire and herbicides. 9. Using GIS for a complex spatial problem to perform an analysis or develop a solution. 10. Combining numeric fields, calculating statistics, generalizing data, summarizing data and using appropriate statistical methods using R, JMP, or SAS. 11. Preparing project reports, including literature review, description of methods, graphs and charts, results, and conclusions or recommendations. 12. Experience with ArcGIS, LiDAR, and experience or exposure to 3D CAD systems are the “Must Haves” for this job. The person in this full-time GIS Remote Sensing Office Technician (contracted) role will process and analyze a variety of spatial data products (including LiDAR data, Orthophotos, and Video) and assist with general analysis support. An understanding of geospatial concepts and GPS survey methods is desired, but not mandatory, and candidates with GIS coursework or applicable work experience are preferred. 5-10 open roles currently
GIS Technician job responsibilities include: A Bachelor’s Degree is required (Bachelor of Science, Remote sensing or GIS would be great, but any natural resources or engineering disciplines might also work) Some experience with ArcGIS is required. Experience or exposure to any 3D CAD system (Microstation is the system you will use) LIDAR knowledge, experience would also be a big plus – candidates should at least know what this is. Lidar (also written LIDAR, LiDAR or LADAR) is a remote sensing technology that measures distance by illuminating a target with a laser and analyzing the reflected light. Although thought by some to be an acronym of Light Detection And Ranging, the term lidar was actually created as a portmanteau of "light" and "radar". They are looking for a part time (around 20 hours a week) paid intern. The internship would start during the summer and continue until funding is exhausted (likely end of the year). It is open to anyone with an interest and some background in GIS. Most of the time on the project will involve planning/historical aerial photography related issues.
