Based in Stanley, Competitive Salary. Job Purpose: To provide GIS support to Falkland Islands Government (FIG) officers, SAERI employees and projects, NGOs in the Falkland Islands, the wider UKOTs and to manage aspects of the Falkland Islands Information Management System and GIS (IMS-GIS) Data Centre. The South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI) has been leading a project for the development and implementation of the Information Management System (IMS) and GIS Data Centre for the UKOTs in the South Atlantic region. Ascension Island, Falkland Islands, Tristan da Cunha and Saint Helena governments have been active participants in the project and the IMS-GIS data centre has grown and developed and now represents an online metadata catalogue as data discovery and access service; secure servers offering storage, security and backup for local data; analytical and mapping facilities supported by open source GIS courses; a series of best practice documents, guidelines, research permits, data request forms and data policy for avoiding data losses, duplication and ensuring data are documented, trackable and kept locally. Overall Purpose of the Job: The GIS Technician serves in a GIS support role to the Project Engineer, GIS Analyst, field crews and other District staff related to GIS products, materials, troubleshooting and providing assistance for GIS and related mobile GIS deployed solutions. This position has three key roles in the District’s GIS department including GIS data creation and editing, support of mobile GIS users and other District staff who are users of GIS technology, and GIS analysis. The GIS Technician will work closely with the GIS Analyst in implementing new GIS capabilities, prepare and produce maps, conduct spatial analysis, maintain data layers, and incorporate maps and data into reports. This position will provide user support and work collaboratively with GIS system users and other District staff to understand needs, design solutions, manage data quality, and identify requirements for specific projects. The USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, MD, is seeking a contract database specialist to design a data management system for marine bird survey data being collected in the Gulf of Mexico. The position entails developing and maintaining a Relational Database, writing data processing code in the R language for QA/QC and data
summary, and supporting the project website. All work must be fully documented and version controlled. Experience with GIS systems is desirable. Qualifications: A BS or MS in biology, informatics, data science, statistics, or a related field with 1+ yrs experience working on data systems or monitoring data. Candidate should be well versed in the R statistical language, SQL, and MS-SQL Server or PostGres/PostGIS. Experience with Python, Git version control systems, and ArcGIS or another GIS software system preferred. Some statistical background is desirable. Tasks: Create data processing code and associated documentation for aerial survey data (QA/QC, formatting, data summarization). Build and maintain an SQL server RDBMS for data storage and retrieval.
