The Intern will coordinate, train, and help oversee SCA Youth Data Collection Teams in the field collecting natural resource data with I-Pads and other field technology. The Senior GIS Intern works in the Natural Resources Division of San Mateo County Parks, and is the primary GIS representative for the entire Parks Department. This position reports directly to the Natural Resources Manager, but assists other Park staff with GIS-based mapping requests. The Senior GIS Intern is responsible for collecting, cleaning and organizing all GIS files for San Mateo County Parks and adding the files to the San Mateo County Parks Geodatabase. The Senior GIS Intern is also responsible for maintaining and updating the Geodatabase, keeping it organized and ensuring the appropriate files are added to it. The Intern works closely with the County's GIS team and GIS contractors, who maintain a larger, county-wide GIS program and Geodatabase. The Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is federally listed as a threatened species north and west of the Colorado River under the Endangered Species Act. Desert tortoise monitoring will assist researchers in estimating population density. Monitoring occurs during April and May to coincide with the peak activity season of desert tortoises. Ten (10) AmeriCorps field monitors will be required to demonstrate proficiency in backcountry wilderness field skills, including but not limited to 4WD vehicle operation, use of GPS and topographic maps, and PDA technology. In addition, field monitors will be field tested on their knowledge of and ability to follow monitoring protocols thoroughly and precisely. Field monitors will work for 5 consecutive days with 2 days off. Monitors must be available to work any of the 7 days each week, with the understanding that the schedule is subject to change with little or no notice. Field camping is required. This position will require long hours including early mornings and may include weekends. Each year, the Conservation and Land Management (CLM) internship program places 100-120 graduates from colleges and universities across the country in five-month paid internships to assist biologists and other professional staff who work with a variety of federal agencies as well as non-profits focused on conservation efforts. In 2017, internships will be based in the western US (AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, OR, MT, NM, NV, UT, WA, and WY), with a small number on the east coast (MA, NC, NY). The federal agencies we partner with include the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Forest Service (USFS), U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS), U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and others. Non-profit partners include the the Mid-Atlantic Regional Seed Bank and the Rae Selling Berry Seed Bank.
Since 2001, the CLM program has successfully placed over 1,150 interns, providing them with a rich experience from which to launch their professional careers.
