Department of Land Conservation & Development- Natural Hazards Program The State of Oregon, Department of Land Conservation and Development, Natural Hazards Program is pleased to announce one summer internship opportunity. The internship will give the selected student work experience performing a project or task that the Natural Hazards Program identifies as necessary to achieve its goals, and develop the student’s communication skills and knowledge of natural hazard planning and permitting practices and procedures. One of the goals of the Natural Hazards Program is ensuring that Oregon’s flood-prone communities remain compliant with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) by providing education, technical assistance, and program monitoring. Development within flood hazard zones is regulated by nearly all of Oregon’s cities and counties. The Natural Hazards Program administers the federal NFIP program at the state level, assisting and overseeing local activities. This internship is intended to develop knowledge and skills that will be useful to anyone contemplating work as a land use planner for local or regional government. Duties during the internship will include some but not necessarily all of the following:
The internship will begin with two weeks of intensive training on managing development in flood hazard zones according to NFIP standards and guidelines and state policy and law. Extensive in-state travel is likely. The internship will be supervised by DLCD’s Planning Services Division Manager and will work closely with the state’s NFIP Coordinator. Skills required: The intern should have excellent writing, strong critical thinking and good oral communication skills. A strong interest in land use or hazard mitigation planning as a potential career is desired. Type of student desired: Graduate or upper-level undergraduate student majoring in natural resources, environmental sciences, civil engineering, public policy, planning, or geography. Compensation: $15/hour, a minimum of 32 hours and a maximum of 40 hours per week. Duration: Maximum 12 week duration starting after June 1, 2011. To gain field experience in environmental sampling and analytical techniques. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: To collect in situ data (weekly) using Hydrolab and other field instruments, collect water samples periodically and submit to DEQ for analysis. Aggregate newly-acquired and historical water quality data and analyze for trends (oversight provided), monitor and sample algal populations, interpret results, conduct two aquatic macrophyte surveys. Provide outreach for lakeshore owners and park customers. Write end-of-season report summarizing data collected and trends (if any). MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Two years college level education/experience in biology, botany, ecology, limnology, natural resources management, environmental science or closely related field; or any combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required performing the job. Cartography and Creativity
Matthew Hampton, senior cartographer/GIS specialist with Metro, will speak on how being creative in your mapmaking workflows can often lead to better results. He will review four projects that had different workflows and different outcomes. Hampton, whose official title at Metro is senior transportation planner, sits on the board of the North American Cartographic Information Society and earned a Master's degree in Geography from Portland State in 2005. The colloquium is scheduled for noon in Cramer Hall 413. All are welcome. Refreshments will be provided. The Nature Conservancy has a GIS Analyst position open in their Portland, Oregon Office.

Puchy (BES), Mary Bushman (BES), and Marissa Dorais (PP&R) from the City of Portland Parks' City Nature and Environmental Services’ Willamette Watershed & TEES Program Elk Rock Island, a 14 acre Natural Area Park owned and managed by the City Nature Division of Portland Parks & Recreation, is located in the Willamette River just offshore from Milwaukie. The island’s Oregon white oak woodlands and short-grass prairies contain plants uncommon in Portland and provide habitat for wildlife including bald eagles and peregrines that nest nearby. BES generously provided initial funding and PP&R│BES staffs are working together on long term site restoration and stewardship activities. The genesis of the project was PP&R’s Natural Area Ecosystem Management Plan and Portland’s Watershed Management Plan. The on-going work is a unique intra- bureau effort to achieve common goals of conserving and restoring special status habitats and associated wildlife and plant species. The Geospatial Database Specialist serves as an important member of MB&G's geospatial team. The team provides a full range of GIS solutions and support for multi-disciplinary projects. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: • Knowledge of SQL Server 2008 and ArcObjects .NET. • Experience writing views, stored procedures, functions, SSIS packages and ad hoc SQL. • Knowledge of ESRI Geodatabase types. • GIS experience: map making, editing, data import/export, data capturing. • Edits and prepares presentations, maps and graphic products. • Demonstrate GIS products and/or trains others in techniques. • Provides technical support to projects managed by others. • Contributes to technical reports as required, e.g., technical approach, methods, data analysis • Responsible for accurate and timely deliverables and documentation for all projects. • Complete work in reasonable amount of time and remain within budget.
