YOUR POSITION WITH TNC The Nature Conservancy is involved in a wide variety of projects in Oregon; from informing legislators on potential outcomes of policies to managing the largest portfolio of nature preserves in the state. GIS data and analyses have been important tools in crafting our strategies for more than two decades. The GIS Intern will be fully incorporated into the Oregon business unit with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. Our work is oriented around teams which each focus on a specific habitat type including a forest team, a marine/estuaries team, a freshwater team and a deserts team. Climate change mitigation and adaptation are overarching goals across all our projects. Interns provide scientific support for the projects and gain valuable hands-on marine conservation experience. Projects take place at Archipelagos’ research bases on the islands of Samos and Lipsi in the eastern Aegean Sea. Interns will board three research boats, the Aegean Explorer, Pinelopi and Naftilos also serve as mobile platforms for there research and conservation work. The Aegean Sea supports important populations of marine mammals (Common, Bottlenose, Striped and Risso’s dolphins, Sperm whales and Cuvier’s beaked whales and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal), as well as habitats of ecological and economic importance (Posidonia seagrass and coralligenous reefs). However they are being increasingly impacted by human activity. Carnivore Research Internship! Dates: October 15, 2019 - April 30, 2020 Hours: 15 hours/week Application Deadline: October 8, 2019 Cascadia Wild, a Portland-based 501c(3) nonprofit, seeks an intern to support the operations the Wolverine Tracking Project, a community science project that uses wildlife camera, snow tracking, and scat surveys to monitor rare carnivores in the Mt Hood National Forest. The intern will gain experience in all aspects of supporting a field-based community science research project, including equipment maintenance, data processing and analysis, and volunteer management. Work will be done at Cascadia Wild’s Northeast Portland office on a regular weekly schedule. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in additional fieldwork on weekends as availability allows. Duties include -Reviewing photos captured by motion-activated cameras to identify wildlife species -Gathering trip reports and photos and using them to write social media and blog posts -Entering data onto spreadsheets and maps -Checking and maintaining readiness of field equipment, including motion-activated cameras, scent bait, GPS units, etc. -Ensuring the proper storage of genetic samples -Assisting in planning and execution of the spring volunteer appreciation party Additional opportunities for motivated interns include participating in weekend field work on Mt.
