Golden Gate National Parks: Fort Mason, San Francisco 5 days per week October 4, 2016– September 30, 2017 OVERVIEW The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) is a destination for both locals and international visitors with its sweeping vistas, immense biological diversity, and unique cultural resources. With over 15 million visitors annually and over 80,000 acres of land, the GGNRA is the largest urban national park in the country. The GIS department documents, coordinates, plans, implements, manages, and maintains databases and applications of the Geographic Information System (GIS) for the entire Conservancy; The department provides training and technical support to staff; coordinates GIS activities with internal staff, multiple partner agencies, and the community; coordinates and monitors consultants/contractors; collects data; produces maps and other graphics for internal use and external production. POSITION DESCRIPTION Are you interested in maps and being outside? Do you like the idea of translating real world park features into graphics and databases? What about looking for spatial trends and answering questions with them? We are looking for a GIS intern who is excited about working with maps and spatial data; cultural, natural and visitor resources! Collect information in the field and come back to the office and create maps. Organize, manage, and interpret spatial data sets. The GIS intern will work closely with staff to support GIS needs of park projects, park stewardship and other departments with project based and ad-hoc mapping requests. Description of this internship: Oregon DEQ currently uses ambient monitoring station locations using the latitude and longitude of stream mouth and the distance upstream (in miles) where the station is located (LLID). This project would migrate water quality sampling sites from the LLID stream line work to the NHD stream network on a basis-by-basin approach. This work would occur in the Deschutes Basin. Water quality sampling sites in the basin will be migrated to the NHD high line work using established tools and a written procedure. Extensive and detailed QA/QC using documented procedures will be a major part of the project. Familiarity with ArcGIS is preferred; use of ArcGIS Model Builder is a plus. This project would give the intern an opportunity to learn about NHD and the use of GIS tools for foundational water quality management as well as the opportunity to interact with water quality professionals at DEQ. July 5, 2016 to September 26, 2016 El Malpais & El Morro National Monuments Position El Malpais National Monument is in the process of collecting of cave-related data and information and needs more field investigation of these cave resources. The selected SCA intern will have both in-office and field duties organizing and digitizing existing cave data from a variety of sources(i.e. creating metadata, building geodatabases, etc.), assist in the development of remote sensing procedures to monitor resources, assist in the development of a protocol for field surveys using ArcGIS Collector, and cave mapping. Any new caves found will need to be named - a fun perk for this position. Duties will be split evenly between these indoor and outdoor tasks, or as weather and workloads require. Come explore our caves and lava flows, and help us build our cave management program! Upon successful completion of the GIP internship, the participant is eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award. Field work will involve navigating rough backcountry roads, hiking on lava flows in remote wilderness, mapping resources using a differential GPS, and mapping lava tube caves.The high desert environment of El Malpais ranges from 7-8,000 feet in elevation.We have over 400 lava tubes that can be up to a mile long and some contain the most southerly perennial ice in North America.
