Position Overview EWP is hiring a seasonal field representative to document existing Washington Park signage, using ArcGIS field maps, a smartphone or tablet, and a GPS receiver. For each sign the hardware and software will be used to document its location, enter descriptive information and take a photograph. The GIS Field Mapping Intern should be prepared to traverse Washington Park at distances sometimes upwards of 1 mile on trails, and be able to document signage both on trails and on or around roadways. They should be prepared to work outside in all weather conditions. The ideal candidate is someone who is enthusiastic and eager to gain more GIS field mapping experience. Position Description Seattle Public Utilities' (SPU) GIS Data Maintenance Unit is recruiting for two (2) undergraduate level Utility GIS interns. The GIS Data Maintenance Unit is responsible for maintaining GIS data layers related to drainage and wastewater and drinking water. The position is classified as a student hourly (not a graduate research assistantship). The position involves assisting on a drought-related project funded by NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System. Tasks on the project will be conducted under direct supervision of two research climatologists from the Desert Research Institute (Western Regional Climate Center) as well as a faculty member from the Department of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno that serves as the State Climatologist for Nevada. Specifically, the project aims to conduct a weather station inventory and network gap analysis for the state of Nevada and make recommendations to NOAA on new site locations to add new weather stations to help improve drought monitoring around the state.
