Mr. Elvis Tata GIS Technology for Enhancing Forest Conservation in Cameroon Considering the increased marginalization of indigenous forest people and the growing global concern about threatened and irreplaceable biodiversity in swamps and old growth forest of Cameroon, public demand in Cameroon more than ever calls for a contextualized technical knowledge useful to breach gaps in conservation planning by policy makers. To this effect, Elvis will be suggesting adaptable GIS methods to enhance Cameroon’s conservation schemes from lessons he has learned in the Pacific Northwest. Elvis is a high school geography teacher from Yaoundé, Cameroon and is completing a six-month Fellowship at WFI studying GIS technology use in the forestry sector. Volunteer GIS Intern Reports to: GIS Analyst Position Summary The intern will work with an experienced professional, the GIS Analyst, primarily to support Wild Salmon Center site-based and regional conservation programs by developing and maintaining relevant data and metadata as they pertain to various projects. Depending on the intern's experience, interest and availability, s/he will be responsible for performing a broad range of GIS functions including but not limited to: creating informative maps; gathering, processing and documenting geographic data; fixing broken links in maps to recently moved data; editing vector/raster datasets; conducting research (finding datasets, including imagery, new GIS tools, etc.); creating datasets from raw data or converting from non-spatial form; and creating or finding documentation of datasets. A successful intern will be able to work both independently and collaboratively; develop high quality maps; and hone professional GIS skills as applied to conservation projects. The internship is a volunteer position envisioned for 10-20 hours per week for approximately eight to ten weeks.
