Geospatial Systems Specialist GS-0301-11 The Pacific Northwest Region of the U.S. Forest Service will soon be announcing two permanent, full-time GS-0301-11 Geospatial Systems Specialist positions. Summary of the Position: This position is part of a regional team supporting regional and forest projects with geospatial data creation, analysis and management, technical support, and map production. Geospatial System Specialists assist in managing/maintaining geospatial data and support customers in using GIS technology for their projects. Our GIS products and services include web maps, mobile GIS support, spatial analysis, publication maps, spatial data requests, geoprocessing tools and more. Other examples of duties associated with this position include: DUTIES: • Serve as DRM work lead and liaison to the Forest unit regarding Program of Work. • Work with managers and resource specialists to determine type, amount and level of geographical information required to develop and analyze ecosystem management alternatives. • Provide the public and decision makers with information by utilizing the ArcGIS Platform (ArcGIS Desktop/Pro, ArcSDE, ArcGIS Online, Collector, Survey123, etc) in a timely manner. • Work with contractors, collaborators and other agencies to coordinate and share geospatial information for various resource and other projects. • Utilize GIS technology and established GIS procedures to produce maps and graphics for various Forest resource programs, planning documents, and a variety of other requirements. • Assist with the organization and maintenance of resource information and data to facilitate analysis across multiple disciplines including but not limited to recreation, silviculture, planning, engineering and fire. • Manage and analyze geospatial data to support resource management decisions for multiple resource, jurisdictional, and ownership units over a large geographical region. Performs multi-scale and/or multi-resource analysis in support of planning, analysis, and monitoring activities. • Work with Forest Data Stewards to manage corporate geospatial data according to regional, national and local specifications. YOUR POSITION WITH TNC The Nature Conservancy is involved in a wide variety of projects in Oregon; from informing legislators on potential outcomes of policies to managing the largest portfolio of nature preserves in the state. GIS data and analyses have been important tools in crafting our strategies for more than two decades. The GIS Intern will be fully incorporated into the Oregon business unit with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. Regular guidance and feedback on all aspects of the professional experience will be given. The GIS Intern will work in a team environment to address important conservation issues facing Oregon. Learning outcomes will include exposure to many aspects of conservation planning including development of custom GIS products for TNC staff, involvement in project planning on multi-disciplinary teams, spatial and non-spatial database design and contributing to written reports and documentation. The GIS Intern will also be expected to craft and deliver a presentation on a project they worked on during their employment. Learning opportunities beyond the typical work duties, such as spending occasional days in the field or helping other teams with non-GIS tasks, will also be provided. This is a 15-20 hour per week internship that starts January 2020 and ends June 2020; with flexibility on scheduled days. Pay is $15.75 per hour ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Oregon Chapter of The Nature Conservancy makes extensive use of Geographic Information Systems as a platform for conservation planning, communications and scientific analysis. Our work is oriented around teams which each focus on a specific habitat type including a forest team, a marine/estuaries team, a freshwater team and a deserts team. Climate change mitigation and adaptation are overarching goals across all our projects.
